Celebrating Public Power Week 2021
We thank you for your support of public power — an American tradition that works. Join us in celebrating Public Power Week (#PublicPowerWeek) Sunday, Oct. 3, through Saturday, Oct. 9. We will be sharing why we’re proud to be your public power utility throughout the week, in ways the community can participate as well.
Lakeland Electric serves the Lakeland area with affordable, dependable and sustainable power. The utility is one of more than 2,000 public power utilities that provide electricity to more than 49 million people across the country.
There are many reasons why the City of Lakeland continues to own and operate its own electric utility. Lakeland Electric has operated alongside our customers as a public power utility since 1904.
Public power utilities are community-owned, which means the people in the Lakeland area are included in the decision-making process. Knowing our community and its needs helps us keep homes, businesses, and public places powered year-round.
Another benefit you receive from Lakeland Electric's not-for-profit business model is that your electricity rates are consistently some of the lowest in the state of Florida.
Lakeland Electric's strong commitment to our community can also be seen in how our employees— the people behind public power—work hard to provide the best customer service every day. These individuals from many departments including, administration, accounting and finance, public relations, field supervision, and engineering and operations, come together and serve our neighbors.
In the past year, we: presented 15 scholarships to high school seniors, supported dozens of local non-profits through grants and sponsorships, offered free energy-saving tree giveaways, volunteered for and supported community events, and our

We take pride in our governance structure, with an appointed Utility Committee comprising local members, city commissioners and may, that has open meetings the Friday prior to the first Monday of the month at 11 a.m., at the city hall.
