A bright bolt of lightning illuminates dark, stormy clouds with jagged streaks of light.

As hurricane season officially begins today, June 1, 2026 (June 1 – November 30), Lakeland Electric is committed to keeping our community informed, prepared, and supported before, during, and after severe weather. While we work year-round to strengthen our system, preparation is a shared responsibility, and a little planning now can make a big difference later.

What Lakeland Electric Is Doing

Our crews and teams begin preparing well in advance of hurricane season by:

  • Inspecting and maintaining power lines, poles, and equipment

  • Trimming vegetation near power lines to reduce outages

  • Staging materials and coordinating with mutual aid partners

  • Reviewing emergency response plans and conducting drills

When a storm threatens our area, we activate our emergency operations plan to respond as quickly and safely as possible.

During the Storm

Your safety is the top priority. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Stay away from downed power lines. Always assume they are energized

  • Avoid flooded areas, especially where electrical equipment may be present

  • Use generators safely, outdoors and away from windows and doors

  • Report outages through our website, mobile app, or outage reporting line

After the Storm

Once conditions are safe, our crews begin damage assessments and restoration efforts. Power is restored in a strategic order to bring electricity back to the greatest number of customers as quickly as possible, starting with critical services like hospitals and emergency facilities.

You can help by:

  • Reporting outages or hazards

  • Staying clear of crews working in your area

  • Being patient as restoration efforts continue
