Celebrating Public Power Week: Powering Lakeland Together

Each October, Lakeland Electric joins more than 2,000 community-owned utilities across the nation to celebrate Public Power Week, a time to recognize the people, partnerships, and purpose behind the power.

Public power means local power. It means that every dollar earned stays right here, invested in the community that powers our homes, schools, and businesses. As a community-owned utility, our priorities are guided by the people we serve, not by investors.

Affordable Power for Every Home

At Lakeland Electric, we are proud to be among the most affordable electric providers in Florida. Public power customers across the nation saved $4.2 billion on electric bills last year compared to customers of investor-owned utilities.

Our commitment to affordability drives our long-term planning and NextGen investments, ensuring we provide dependable and sustainable power for generations to come.

Reliability You Can Count On

Public power customers also benefit from fewer and shorter outages. In 2023, those avoided interruptions saved $112.5 million for families nationwide.

Lakeland Electric crews train year-round and are often first on the scene after severe weather. Whether it is restoring service after a storm or maintaining critical infrastructure, our employees take pride in serving the community they call home.

Power That Stays Local

As a public power utility, we reinvest in our community instead of paying shareholder dividends. That model means more resources stay here, supporting city services, schools, and local initiatives.

Every decision we make, from system upgrades to customer programs, is guided by the people who live and work in Lakeland. That is the real value of public power.

Celebrating the People Behind the Power

This week, you will see videos of employees’ children sharing what their parents do at Lakeland Electric and what “power” means to them. These stories remind us that behind every light we turn on is a person, a family, and a community working together.

Follow us on social media throughout Public Power Week (Oct. 6–12) and join the conversation using #PublicPowerWeek and #LakelandElectric.

Together, we are more than a utility.
We are Lakeland’s power - affordable, dependable, and sustainable.
