To help you prepare even further, we’re excited to partner with LALtoday for a free generator giveaway! Details are below! As hurricane season approaches and power demands begin to fluctuate, many residents turn to portable generators to keep their homes and businesses running smoothly during outages. While generators are incredibly useful, improper operation can pose serious safety hazards.
Why Generator Safety Matters
Generators produce electricity through combustion, which introduces risks such as carbon monoxide exposure, electrical shock, burns, and fire hazards. A few simple precautions can significantly reduce these dangers and help ensure safe operation when you need power most.1. Operate Generators Outdoors Only
Generators release carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly.
Always run generators outside; never in enclosed areas, garages, or near windows, doors, or vents.
2. Keep Equipment Dry
Moisture increases the risk of electrical shock:
• Use an open canopy or tent rated for generator use
• Place the generator on a dry, level surface
• Keep cords away from puddles and standing water
• Avoid operating with wet hands
3. Use Proper Extension Cords
Only use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords:
• Ensure cords can handle the generator’s output
• Inspect for fraying or damage before use
• Keep cords away from pinch points and walkways
4. Never Back Feed a Building
NEVER plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. Back feeding can:
• Electrocute utility workers
• Cause electrical fires
• Damage your home’s electrical system
To safely power your home, use a generator-grade extension cord connected to an inlet box, or have a licensed electrician install a transfer switch.
5. Don’t Exceed the Generator’s Capacity
Know your generator’s wattage limits. Overloading can cause overheating, damage, or fire.
Start appliances one at a time and stick to essential loads.
6. Handle Fuel with Care
Fuel is highly flammable. Always:
• Turn off and cool the generator before refueling
• Store fuel in approved containers
• Keep fuel away from sparks, heat, and direct sunlight
7. Maintain a Clear Safety Zone
Generators get extremely hot and have moving parts. Keep children, pets, and non-essential personnel at least several feet away during operation.
8. Perform Routine Maintenance
If your generator has been sitting since last hurricane season, maintenance may be required. Follow manufacturer guidelines for:
• Oil changes
• Air and fuel filter replacements
• Inspection for leaks or damage
9. Allow Cooling Before Storage
Once you’re finished using it, let the generator fully cool before storing or transporting to prevent burns or fire hazards.
10. Please Review the Owner’s Manual
Each model has unique requirements. The owner’s manual provides critical information for safe operation and troubleshooting.
